My first dumb effort, no warning by whoever posted the method on this site, I assumed it would come off the way hands do on clocks, an easy slide, and didn't take any precautions:
I broke the plastic needle off its brass hub.
Then I had to get the brass hub off. Made several efforts. Finally succeeded using a tack puller bought at hardware store, looks like a screwdriver with a forked bent tip, use like a nail puller.
I first tried making shields for the gauge face so I wouldn't scratch it, i.e. cutting a slot in a piece of thin lauan plywood and sliding that over gauge face. But that didn't leave enough space to get the tack puller in so in the end I pried straight against the gauge face and no problems, didn't dent or bend it and no scratch marks left.
But the force needed was MAJOR. I could see the wide part of the brass bending as I pried up - - it's really thin - - and I could just imagine it ripping apart or permanently deforming on me. Then POP and off it came.
I'd guess they use some sort of loctite or epoxy on that when they put it on.
Still haven't gone inside speedo yet to do the work. Then I'll face reattaching needle and needle hub. When needle broke free of hub it sheared off the two little plastic pegs that are headed over like rivets on back side of brass. I may drill two tiny holes up into the stubs for epoxy to flow into on regluing it. May need to touch up my efforts with flat black paint if I go through into outer side.
I DID lift needle over its stop peg and let it come to rest, then marked that point on the gauge face with pencil, before removal, as recommended. That's where I'll re-set it to.
Post your results on here.
