Speedometer Replacement and Possible New Dashboard

I have a 1990 900 Convertible with about 125K miles; speedometer started acting eratically, and now either doesn't work at all, or registers anywhere from 10 to 25% below the real speed. Local mechanic says I need a new one with a cost of about $900 ($600 for parts, $300 for labor, since he has to take out the dashboard, etc.) (He's already tried lubricating the cable, etc.) Does the cost seem about right? Body, top, and seats all in good shape (either replaced or redone in the past 3 years or so). If it makes sense, does it also make sense at this time to replace the cracked dashboard (assuming that I could actually find one?) Where would one look for it? Thanks very much!! Joe
