Fuel isses and high idle

I just bought a 1986 16 valve 900 in Anchorage. It's having two issues. The first is that I have to crank it over a few times to get it to start. It helps if I pump the gas. I think there's a problem with the fuel delivery. Also, my parents took the car out last week and it stalled out on the highway. They said it seemed like there wasn't gas getting to the engine (I don't know what they're basing that on). It was towed to the shop and the mechanic couldn't get it to start. It sat overnight at the shop and the next day they said it started right up and had good fuel pressure. He guessed that the fuel pump was starting to go bad.
The second issue is that the car idles at about 1200-1400 rpms. I checked the easy adjustments (cable and screw adjustment) but that didn't help.
I have a summer job here and none of my tools. I ordered a Bentley's and I plan on getting a few tools and an ohm meter. I'm trying to decide if I go big and start replacing stuff (and drive it back to Eugene,OR) or just let it limp through the summer and sell it in a couple months and let the buyer know the issues.
