JB,
It is possible to remove the tranny from below but the reason that experienced Saab mechanics always lift the power unit out is because it's much easier and quicker and there is much less potential for "after the fact" problems. If you're considering this because you don't have an engine hoist then the best advice you'll get is, "Do whatever it takes to get an engine hoist". If you are thinking of dropping the tranny out the bottom because fiddling with the engine systems worries you then all I can say is spend some time looking at that stuff and making notes. It's really pretty simple compared to most modern cars. For instance, when you disconnect and lay the injection harness back you'll find that, with just one or two exceptions, the connectors can't hardly be replaced wrong. Also, just unbolt the power steering pump from the engine and leave it in the car. That's easier and faster than disconnecting the hoses. Unbolt and lay the A.C. back too. Use a bungee cord to hold the compressor back. By the way, this logic applies whether you have a five speed or an automatic. Remember to place a piece of plywood or metal to protect the condenser. The engine will bump it as it's lifted out.
Good luck
