The AMM is the electrical device between the air filter and the throttlebody. It's a single big plug, easy to remove. With the AMM unplugged, the car will run in limp-home mode *usually*, although it will run very badly. You may find no difference from how it's running now, which makes the whole thing a bad test. :) It's possible that your AMM is failed to the point it's as good as not being there, hence the poor running and permanent CEL - the ECU is already in limp-home mode! :)
The ECU isn't readily testable. If the car does start, that's about all you can do... most shops just swap with known-good.
You might try calling around to some of the dismantlers in the Sponsors section (Elite, Goldwing, Andrews, etc.) and see if they can set you up with a used/good AMM. You might also see if there's anyone in your neck of the woods with a similar car that wouldn't mind dropping by for a beer and an AMM swap... :)
