Bad Install of Rear Bushings - long rant - advice? Posted by nateh89spg [Email] (#563) [Profile/Gallery] (more from nateh89spg) on Thu, 16 Aug 2007 17:41:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hey All,
A little history: I removed the rear trailing arms and panhard bar this past weekend to replace the bushings. Friday, I spoke to who I believe is the proprietor of a repair shop by my work who said they could do this work. He said he'd charge me the standard hourly rate - probably going to be higher than a machine shop, but it would be convenient. So I dropped off the bars and appropriate bushings (labeled and taped in bags to the correct location). I picked up the two trailing arms and panhard bar yesterday during my lunch break. I was in a rush, so I put them on the back seat of my 9000 and headed back to work. This afternoon, I took a close look at the bushings I had "pressed" in by a shop close to work. On one of the front trailing arm bushings, the rubber was separated from the metal surround, one of the Panhard bushings was off center (the inner sleeve), and most of the inner sleeves and housings on the bars have serious nicks in them. Took a ton of pictures tonight so I have documentation. The parts look like they were installed by a money with a hammer. Needless to say, I am beyond pissed. I should have looked at they closely before I left the shop, but didn't.
Am I correct that bushings are pressed, not hammered in? I have zero confidence that any of these bushings will last any amount of time.
I am bring them back tomorrow with the invoices of the purchase of the bushings and the receipt for this work and give them a chance to make good.
It just bothers me that there are companies out there that accept work knowing they don't have the appropriate tooling to do the job. I would have been fine if they said they couldn't do it and yes, I told them on the phone it was an 88 saab 900 SPG and that I purchased the bushings from a site sponsor. So they knew, or should have known what to expect.
I really can't wait to get this handling problem solved, I LOVE driving these cars.
Take Care,
Nate
