1990 SPG speedo cable problem

I had broken speedo cable. I got a new one from http://www.eeuroparts.com.
Replaced the broken one with the new one but I am unable to secure it at the back of the speedo. There are some 5mm missing and I can not push the cable to the end. I am not sure if the new cable is a bit different or I am doing something wrong.
What is the right procedure for replacing the cable ? At which end should I start to fix it i.e. from the back of speedo or from the gearbox ?
Had anybody similar problem ?
I have got idea that the cable itself perhaps is by 5mm too long but I am afraid to cut these 5mm off in case I am wrong.
Please help.
Thanks.
