The 900 2 door was originally intended to be a low-priced car to take the place of the expiring "90" Model (99 front end, 900 back end). SaabUSA was busily moving "up market" wanted no part of an "entry" model (priced below a base 900 3-door but yet much more expensive than Japanese or domestic compacts), and the car wasn't intended to be marketed in Europe in an upmarket (S) trim. Finally a few were imported in '85 and '86, all in "S" trim, as part of the pushing and shoving that resulted in the C900 Convertible. I'd guess a couple or three thousand at most, each year, in the USA. There were many more sold in Europe.
