...I use a 3 foot persuader. I only pull plug number 1. Why? I place a pencil, eraser side down, into the spark plug hole. When the pencil is maximally up, you are pretty near TDC.
ALSO, the camshaft sprockets are marked for TDC. They have a mark that is straight up when at TDC. I used tiny zip ties to lock 1 sprocket to the chain, and I counted how many spaces away the next sprockets TDC mark was and I wrote it down. This method makes sure you cannot lose TDC timing no matter how much you try.
Some people say use paint, but paint rubs of. Some people say use a punch, but do you relly want to use a punch on a chain that might break at 6000 RPM? I then marked the chain at both TDC spaces with tiny colorful zip ties(but dental floss or plastic lanyard works well and won't cause damage if they are forgotten on reassembly).
You can pull the head with one sprocket locked to the timing chain, but not with 2, (well I can by I have practice and it is really not worth it.)
Be careful. There are hidden bolts on the underside of the head that connect to the block that are to the firewall side of the head. Without removing the 2 hidden upside down underside screws your head will warp or not budge.
Also, clearly mark the timing of your distributor with a punch. Allign the distributer mark with the rotor direction, etc...
Best,
C
