You got it right- there's a "Future Models" bulletin board that would be ideal for this discussion.
My situation is unique, though not unique at all for other posters on this board. I have too many (not enough) 900s, an '88 and a '92 S convertible at 220k and 130k respectively. When these cars finally (I really hope it will be a long time and maintain them accordingly, especially the SC) go to the great car lot in the sky, I will either move into a city (several are nearby) or get a diesel. 45-50 MPG will be my target, but having to drive to get everywhere just gets annoying after a while. I have a fine pair of bicycles and a fine pair of legs. I love trains so I can visit my family and go on vacation from time to time.
I suppose all this boils down to the following:
I hope my Saabs last me a good, long time. So far, this is happening all right, thanks in a large part to this site.

All European auto manufacturers have had low-emission, driveable diesels on the market for decades. Currently, Saab-M in the States is doing what it can to turn a profit and stay in business. The "upscale technoperformoluxurygearhead" segment or whatever the marketeering people are calling it does not feel good with a diesel in the current American climate. We have seen a big spike in hybrid demand all of a sudden, so maybe the same will happen when the same people realize how silly hybrids are.... the Prius I pass daily (plate "SIXTYMPG") on the way to work is only getting 36 or so on the highway, and my 8 valve 900 does that. I switch my own engine off going downhill. I think the turning point for hybrids will be when the resource-conscious start to realize what happens when the large batteries in the hybrids need to be replaced.
Funny, the battery in my '88 900 is (knock, knock) nine years old.
Saab did a decent job in the '90s with their b-o power engines, so they have the knowledge, just nobody is interested in a diesel out here yet. It's a shame because now that VW Golf and Jetta TDIs have been outlawed for new sale in NY (friggin' brilliant!!!) their resale values are insane!

End of spewing... Pretty much, good luck, knowing who their overlords are.
