Steve,
I had this same idea a few years back. I went as far as obtaining heated mirrors from a newer 900 (newer than my '84S, but still OG900). I even looked in the Bentley 16V book to see the wiring. But mine are still in the box, yet to be "gotten to."
IIRC, the mirrors are hooked into the electric rear defrost switch and come on when you turn the rear defrost on. I think all you would need to do is to add a hot (12V Pos.) wire tapped into the rear defrost circuit and run this to each mirror. Check with a Bentley 16V book for the wiring diagram.
I would tap into that wire on the defrost relay output, not on the smaller switched 12+ wire (low current, or thinner wire) from the rear defrost dash switch to the relay itself. The relay is meant to handle the current to the rear defrost.
But don't take my word for it! Wait and see if others chime in here. Maybe someone has actually DONE this.
