The distributor plug connector is often a source of mystery issues. The internal prongs inside can become weakened so as to not make contact with the plug. That it revealed itself at that exact spot on your journey may be because of a unique bump/vibration on the roadway at a specific speed. The solution is to delicately pry the 3 internal prongs outward with a small probe. I discovered that problem with my car one afternoon while adjusting the timing and bumping against the plug. Repeated bumps against it caused the engine to almost die, then restart.
I had a similar mystery of the fuel pump randomly shutting on and off. After checking and rechecking the wiring and even replacing the pump with no improvement, I discovered purely by accident one afternoon that it would happen when my left knee hit the side of the cabin. Behind the carpet at the spot is the set of multi-pin plugs which connect all the internal wiring to the fuse box. With the carpeting removed and manipulating the wiring to simulate my knee pressing against it, I could cause the pump to stop and start.
The problem was the over-boost pressure circuit and specifically the plug connection for that circuit. The over-boost sensor is located behind the dash, with the wiring going from the fuel pump relay, to the sensor via that plug, then back to the relay. My solution was to bypass that sensor altogether with a jumper at the relay. Haven't had that problem since.
