Headlight relay Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: whats wrong with my headlights? !!!!, john88, Mon, 10 Sep 2007 17:25:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A very common problem with the headlight relay. I'm pretty sure it's located in the engine compartment relay box. Heat and vibration cause the solder joints inside the relay to crack and fail.
Two solutions - (1) replace the relay with new. Not cheap. (2) repair the relay. Take it out, and pop off the cover. Use a small soldering iron to reflow ONLY the LARGE solder pads. If you look closely, you'll see they don't look right - cracks, holes in the center, etc. Reflow the solder on the large pads. Leave the small solder pads alone. First, they don't crack because they don't support large components. Second, they lead to delicate electronics, and you can damage them with excessive heat. The large pads are used both for carrying electricity and for mechanical mounting of heavy parts, and that's why they fail with vibration.
If you get a used relay (from a junk yard), I'd recommend reflowing the solder joints before installing it - this problem comes with age on all of them.
