I just did mine and had exactly the same problem with the front crank seal (92 900 2.1L manual non-turbo). The original seal actually slides in and out of the pump cover almost without effort. The replacement is much tighter, seems normal to me. I'm wondering if the original is simply a millimeter or two too small??
I was suspicious about something like this because it went from not leaking to leaking like a sieve almost immediately.
