Say you want to find 2nd gear on a box with the shift rod coupling loosened. The shift rod on the tranny will be rotated fully clockwise, then pushed inward. Then align your stick shift in 2nd gear position and re-tighten the coupling. You can use a large screwdriver and the end of the shift rod taper pin to pry/push the rod forward into the tranny. Having the tranny in 2nd also makes it easier to access the coupling nut for tightening. At least it's easier on my old model car.
