Kevin,
Is it possible that the flex band was overtightened? Is the gearbox really slimey or full of fine metal filings? Are you sure that it's third which is missing and not first (sluggish off the line, may be in second)? The gearshift cable adjustment is very critical on these units and if slightly off can cause problems of this type, but only until the annular gear loses teeth, then your worries are over. Even if no one has messed with the shifter cable lately I'd strongly suggest that you check and re-adjust it using the Saab section 4 service manual technique before you go any further. It's a pretty quick and painless task, actually easier than adjusting the throttle pressure cable. Good luck
