It also indicates the level of interior trim and such. It also varies depending upon the year of your car. Later years have more things, such as leather seats rather than cloth. all of the S cars had power windows, upgraded seats (the countour style - may be leather depending upon the year), upgraded radio, different wheels (alloy rather than steel with hubcaps), and a nicer steering wheel too. If you have a sunroof, you said you didn't right? it may be power rather than manual. again the later years S models were closer to the Turbo models in trim, the older models were between the base model (no letter, just 900) and the Turbo and then had Option packages that bring it closer to the Turbo trim.
If you are talking about a 1986 model, the S variant had the 16 valve engine and the non-S had the 8 valve engine.
