That's not bad, I drove to Utica and back, and going out I had the top down. Once the sun started to set behind the south side hills near Little Falls, I had to fire up the heater too.
Before messing around with the transmission itself, change the rubber coupling in the shift linkage (ahead of the firewall under the center of the car behind the engine and ahead of the steering rack) for a whopping $10 in parts and change the transmission fluid to some sort of synthetic. This is a pretty (and) easy job too, just get three quarts of fluid, one or all three of the gaskets, some anaerobic sealant, and a drain pan. Drop the rear cover, let it drain, inspect the innards for metal flash and debris with clean hands, and bolt the cover plate on again with new gaskets. You'll thank me when it gets cold and the transmission still shifts (fresh synthetic fluid).
My father always said they sound like a UFO with multiple (timing, primary) drive chains. Next summer, you're going to drive through the midtown tunnel with the top down in second or third gear listening to that very same noise.
