Iguees it could be a stuck caliper. I don't think that is likely though. Does the hand brake warning light work in the cluster? Seems hard not to notice that. Was the temp gauge at max? Smoke definately coming out of the engine, and not one of the whhels? Did the vehicle pull to one side when you drove it? Did the engine overheat driving it with the e-brake off?
on my 87 the e-brake doesn't release fully. I don't park on hills, and don't allow people to drive my car. The last two times I've handed out the keys to my saab it has been disaster. One was when I had a sticking ignition switch. After telling my friend that he had to rotate the key back about a 1/4 inch after starting it came back w/a burnt starter.
The second time I gave my key to a friend to just get something out of the car. Evidently he was to used to japenese car and attempted to unlock to the left hard enough to break my key right at the lock. Moral of the story is not to let people that don't know saabs drive your car. Things can get broken, most commonly the shift interlock, but, see above.
