Sorry NoSnaab, I was away Posted by CMyles [Email] |
Sorry, I'm doing my paramedic internship in Colorado Springs this month, 300 miles from home, and I can't access the internet while I'm there. Not sure how many miles are on your transmission but here's a few thoughts. Most of the T37 automatics that I opened up which had those symptoms had badly worn or burned clutches, usually just from high mileage. As automatic trannys build high mileage there are two things that happen; 1)friction elements disintegrate and, 2)bearings and thrust surfaces disintegrate. Both of these inject fine particles into the circulating ATF which can cause sluggish movement of the many valves. That results in slow pressure build up and/or slow clutch engagement. It also promotes further wear of the moving parts including the pump gears. The filter and magnet do what they can but there's a limit to their effectiveness. There's a lot of ATF in the transmission and it's cooling system that doesn't get flushed out during a conventional fluid change as well. A series of changes or an "open circuit" change is preferred but costly. The valves sometimes move better as the valve body castings warm up and expand. There are a number of other things that can cause your symptoms such as a torque converter problem but unfortunately fixing that is about 90% of the work of swapping out the unit. You can connect a pressure gauge to the various ports and collect some data that will help with a diagnosis. Changing the fluid often buys some more time before the car becomes undrivable but slipping of worn out friction elements will get worse over time. On a positive note, the progressive deterioration of such a unit often takes quite a while so if you can tolerate the "slipping while cold" condition your transmission may run for quite a while. Hope this helps.
