The stiff pedal is normal for ABS. To thoroughly test the system, check for both warning lights when you switch on the ignition; you will hear the ABS pump run as a buzzing noise. The lights should extinguish in under ten seconds. Next, pump the brake pedal around ten times. You should hear the hydraulic pump come on- note how many pedal pumps it takes to get it to kick in. If that number is less than 5 to 8, the accumulator is probably leaking and could use to be replaced ($120 part, 30 minutes plus bleeding everywhere).
If the ABS light does not light up, someone's trying to pull one over on you. Walk. Computers or the valve block are seriously expensive.
And finally, on your test drive, hit the brakes hard enough to kick in the ABS. That'll give you a good idea of what condition the wheel speed sensors and computer and valving are in.
As for the shift linkage, inspect the rubber coupling under the car in the linkage between the box and the firewall. If it's soaked in oil or otherwise sloppy, that's the reason for the sloppy shifter. Also be sure you can't twist the shift lever (broken welds and collar, $150 for a new lever). If the only thing that's wrong with the transmission is the linkage, use that to bargain down the price because the fix is a *TEN dollar part!* and you can save some cash that way!
Test the front engine mount; you know how. The rattle on takeoff could also be catalyst versus heat shield from a misaligned or mounts-failing exhaust. That's what mine is- crappy muffler shop exhaust won't hurry up and fall off, so the rigged hook (instead of the original welded-on one) chews through a rubber hanger every season.
