Sunday
I began the week by preparing my '87 SPG for it's new owner. Went over the entire car and it checked out fine. I cleaned it, fueled it, and got the records binder and Cd together. Hell, I even printed out a triptik for the new owner to get back home. I posted a bunch of pix inthe gallery under sirjamed if you want to take a peek.
Monday
I woke up early to go ot the airport to meet the buyer. Drove an hour and it was running great. I knew the sale was necessary but not desired. When I arrived at the airport, I went to close the car up and the sunroof decided to not close for the first time since I had purchased the car. As I realize what is occuring, the new owner is walking towards the car and the good feeling is gone. I get into "attack" mode and realize the sunroof moter cover plate, which has two tiny screws, did not have the tiny screws on it. They wiggled thier way out and landed beneath the motor. Back on they went and I got the roof closed as designed. Whew...that was a close one as rain was in the forecast.... We parted ways and damn that car looked good.
Tuesday
Got up about 5:30AM and immediately got busy torquing on my '91 SPG. I was having a tough time getting the ignition lockbarrel cylinder out but I managed. Then replaced the ignition switch and attempted to button it back up until I found a missing piece on the passenger floor. OOPPPS Had to go to work by then. Long sotry short, the ignition/shifter housing was in and out at least 5x before I effectively got the ignition and new short shifter issues sorted out.
Wednesday
I woke up and much the same. Out early sitting on my passenger floor with the extension cable hooked up to a space heater and trouble-light behind me fine tuning the ignition and shifter assembly. EVerything takes so much time when doing it for the first time and not wanting to mess it up. But it started and ended well. Off to work I went.
Came home for lunch and fired it up after ti had not been running for three months as the tranny shed a gear and had it replaced. A moment of truth. Smoked like crazy off the Exhuast manifold and elsewhere buring off the goop. Idle steady and was absolute music to my ears. Three months was too long. Uh-oh , back to work.
When I arrived home, I started it again and let it idle. I then decided to get in check the tranny, thinking the guys that reinstalled everything as adjusted the shift linkage and timeing. Nope, they did not. So when I thought I had it in first and it seemed a little sluggish, well thats because I was engaing 3rd gear. So, unbeknost to me at the time, I was freaking about the tranny being crap, the shop screwed it up, and all the money time was shot! I hung it up and when in for dinner and to hang with the famliy.
Thurday
Once again, I'm out in force. I set the spark time. That was fun ding it for the first time and wondering were in the hell the fingernail polish went???????????? I finally had some coffee and set the gun to 16 BTDC, fiddled with the distributo and there it was plain as day. DONE.
To work.......back home for lunch. Fire up the car with spark time set and engage 1st, let out clutch, crap.....still did not realize I was in 3rd....must be sticky e-brake....break the lugs, jack it up, and wheels spinning freely. Back to work......5PM - cool. Race home, change cloths, grab a beer and it is "Shifter Alignment Time."
Per Bentley and this BB, two screwdrivers, 1/2" wrench, check and recheck, the linkage was aligned and dialed in. Ran thru the gears and they were all there! With the wheels back on the ground, I fired her up, put her in FIRST, again, and sure enough she was all there. Eureka
Friday
I slept in until 7:30........Later this morning I called the seller of the '89 900S German Airflow and '87 9000KT Airflow, both with complete kits in great shape, and made terms to purchase both cars for $900.00
This has been a very productive, educational, and fulfilling Saab kind-of-week, that I can only hope to have many more of witht the '91 SPg, especially with the acquisition of the Airflow kit.
