This makes the starter drive stay engaged with the flywheel after the engine is already started. High RPMs, nasty effects on the "Bendix" drive part of the starter.
That could be what ruined your first replacement, and this one, tho I 'm not exactly sure of what went wrong.
Typical signs: Funny tinkling sound from front of car as you drive, and the lights that come on when you first turn on the key stay on after it's started. Get the key turned back just a bit, quickly, and you might be okay.
Spray WD40 or something in your ignition key slot and work key in and out and turn it a lot. There are more drastic fixes also suggested.
If you ignore the above signs and drive a fair ways, you'll get a funny electrical-ish (hot phenolic sort of) smell and your starter will spin but no longer engage flywheel.
Could This Be You???
