Austin, you know I've found an unused control light in my cluster. It's used only in JP, UK and some other markets - lighting indicator (or backup lights indicator? sorry, not good enough at US car vocabulary). It's green and on when you've got lights or high- or low-beam on. It was added in M90 or M91+ cars and turned on with a jumper set into a 2-pin socket right by lighting switch (inside the dashboard).
Man! It really helps! Although my Pioneer has green and white backlighting and is placed in the upper DIN-bay now I can just look at my instrument cluster having a side eyesight at the road to restore my vision.
