I've tinkered with SAABs for a while and now own my 4th one. I am definitely a novice though, and I may of got myself in too deep.
I'm removing the head on my 91 2.1 liter 900s. I'm doing this to find out what is causing a knocking sound in the engine. I bought the car for $350 (plus a 100 mile tow) from a woman who didn't want to deal with the knock. She took it to a mechanic (not a SAAB shop) and they could only tell her "you have a knock in your engine." I've spent a lot of time tracing the knock w/ a stethoscope and checking stuff suggested on the board. I still don't know what it is, so I've decided to take off the head following Townsend's instructions.
I set the fly wheel to TDC using a jumper swith to the starter motor. (Its an automatic, I tried lifting a tire off the ground and turning the tire but the flywheel didn't move).
Anyway its all gone relatively smoothly so far. My question is:
The valve cover is off and I don't see ANY marks on the cam that align with cam bearing caps. I also don't see a mark on the cam gear/sprockets --which Townsend says are supposed to be perpendicular to the head.
I'm confused... The flywheel is exactly at TDC (the 0 is lined up with the mark on the plastic cover) but I don't see any other marks.
Any pointers on how to proceed? I have two other SAABs (another 91 and an 84 that I've had for ten years), so even though I may be over my head somewhat, it's a good learning experience. Thanks for any help!!!
