I had an SPG that had both sides with torn CV boots. They were filled with sand and what was left of the grease. I drove it that way for about 50,000 miles. Take care when taking sharp turns and keep the clicking to a minimum. After 50K miles, I removed the shafts, swapped the joint from side to side, regreased, installed new boots and drove for 100k miles. It is almost impossible for the joint to come apart while driving and when I disassembled mine, it took some doing to get them apart. Yours are probably clicking because the boots are torn and is allowing the sound to escape. At your earliest, clean repack with grease and install new boots. Chances are very good that no damage has occurred. In the worst case, replace with rebuilt axles at about $80 per side. Each side is about a 2 hour job.
