I have a 1988 SAAB CT. Noticed several months ago, the hood was failing to lift up properly and stay out of the way when I was checking stuff out in the engine bay. Also, it was difficult to slide the hood back onto the rails or runners back near the firewall.
"Solved" the problem with a oak stick. Friday night, while checking out my tranny oil level, one of the hinges broke completely loose from....something.
I carefully re-aligned the hood and got it secured for the trip home.
Before trying to open the hood and mess with it, I thought it best to take my real problem (one broken-away hinge, one sagging hinge) to the experts at SAABNET.
I read as many posts on SAABNET as I could scurry up with my searches.
Here is what I presume....
1) There is some sort of heavy bracket or "plate" that's been affixed to
the underside of the hood.
2) There is some amount of space between the underside of the hood
and the underside of this plate or bracket (1/2" clearance?)
3) The hinge assembly (hinge plus a smaller plate?) is welded onto
the heavy bracket or plate and voila, to have a functioning hinge
Two options for re-attaching the hinge are suggested. They are:
1) Weld it back on -- if there is clearance between the weld
site and the underside of the hood, the paint can probably
be protected from the heat. aligning the hinge properly
is something I'll worry about later. My hunch is that after
20 years, the spot where the hinge was welded should be obvious.
2) Fasten the hinge back on using a mechanical fastener --
rivets or bolts. This would require care-fully drilling holes
and starting the bolts (if this was the fastening option)
onto the proper nuts working with limited clearance
Now someone out there knows a great deal more about the hood hinge
setup than I do.
I would appreciate any/all tips on how to proceed knowing I am
operating on only one hinge at the moment. I am half tempted
to take the hood off for the moment to be safe. I am in Atlanta
and we no longer seem to get rain.
Thanks in advance for reading all this and offering suggestions.
