1) For a year or so I've been wondering why my 93 non-tubo 4-door only managed 20 mpg, a little more on premium, and it has been declining over the lat 5-6000 miles. last fill on regular was 19. On hi-test it was 21.
new plugs, new cap, rotor, check O2 sensor, base timing, check CO level, smoke test the induction, vac leaks tests, nothing turned up wrong. Suspect injectors (but too expensive to try without confirmation from several local techs, friends of mine...which did not come). No driveability issues, it ran fine. just used more gas than i thought it should. Over the course of the 15,0000 miles I've owned it. The value has been declining of late.
New Bougicord wires. Pop! 25mpg in first 150 miles. Test panel was mostly pretty hard driving in the mtns and canyons around here (solano-napa counties, N. Calif.) 150 miles is not a large sample, but hopefully it is a trend indicator.
2) Next: having noted that premium provided better economy, and the effect has been almost zip of late, I thought I'd try dumping a quart of octane booster into a full tank of regular. Might have been over concentrated, but there were no guidelines for partial cans. This stuff was "Turbo Octane Boost 108" or something like that. The quart was supposed to be good for up to 32 gallons, so it was 2oz/gallon initial. Result? Almost 29 mpg over 120 miles of canyon-running.
So...the stuff does work. Is it economical? Remains to be seen. I plan to see if economy drops off with reduced concentration. If it stays the same for the next round, then I over-doped it initially. Need to see where it begins to decline. Then try plain premium and see if there's any advantage of using a little of this stuff with premium. At that point i can calculate the economy of it.
Butt dyno said it was a little stronger. The stuff was on sale at Kragens for $6.
Usually I drive at 2-3 grand rpm, this run was using more Rs than usual, 3-4 and shifting at 5. hard work from my usual. Was trying to get a feel vs my pretty strong MGB. SAAB covers the ground faster, mostly the result of the more modern supple suspension on the SAAB, i am thinking. Throttle response seems similar; the B seems to have a little more grunt at 2-3 but the Maniflow intake w/SUs might account for some of that.
as always, your mileage may vary and all that stuff.
Will post more on the economics of octane booster when and if anything seems clear. In the mean time, this might be interesting.
