this does sound like the classic shift coupler failure. Walter Wong has a great fit for this. It requires that you jack the car up, use jack stands, had have about six good quality zip ties, and a pair of pliers and a pair of wire cutters.
If you've ever seen a traditional motor mount, a rubber sandwich with metal over and under it... that is what the "new" style shift coupler is like. as another described it, it's rectangular in shape, has two bolt nuts through it, and is oriented with the wider side perpendicular to the shifter side.
What happens is that the rubber separates from the metal and when you move the shifter from left to right the coupler does not properly transmit that movement to the transmission itself...
First, turn the key to the on position to allow the shifter to be in NEUTRAL, then turn key off (yes you can't remove the key, that's OK)
Jack up the car, place jack stands properly, using light move under the car to the where you can see the belts on the crank pulley. You are inches from the coupler. Have an assistant lean into the car (do not get into the car!) and move the shifter around, front to rear usually works best, you should see the coupler now. The procedure is to use four zip ties to clamp the two metal pieces tightly together. Put one around each end and pull tight and cut the ends off, then put the other two around the post in the middle from one end to other, you are making an "X" with that pair. when done you will have four ties, two in the middle making the X around the shift coupler and the posts in and out of it, and two more, one at each end, just on the coupler itself and approximately over the bold.
Let use know how you are doing?
