Upon arriving at my Saab 900 one extremely cold morning, while reversing out of my parking spot it felt as if my E Brake had partially frozen.I warmed the car up for a while and brought it to my car wash to thaw out. Later that day it started making an odd sound while braking. The next day the odd sound was gone. Low and behold a few weeks later the same thing happened [this time my E Brake wasn't even engaged. In fact,I never engage my E Brake during the cold months because of this exact fear].so when I brought it in for repair, my mechanic told me that my E-Brake had frozen but that the cable had also bent and that it also missing a needed (spring)that releases the E brake completely. He didnt have the parts on hand and recommended I take it to my dealership and estimated it would cost me $1,000 (+,-) to rectify the problem (which I don't want to spend). He also said it was safe to drive and that the odd sounds would merely be a nuisance. When they put the rear tires back on, the rotors were affected somehow and the E brake wouldn't release at all and the car wouldn't move the slightest. He then removed both E Brake Pads, which freed up the seized car so I could at least get it out of his work shop. The odd sound has also disappeared. I'd rather not pay for the repair and I never use my E brake anyways. While my tires were off, my mechanic told me that my brake pads and rotors were in sound shape. Is this a safety issue I should be concerned about? (other than parking on steep hill?) As you can probably tell I know little about repairing cars but I want to make sure I'm not putting my life or my family at risk by driving a car with the E-brake pads removed. Thanks for your thoughts.
