Looks like I'll be under the car again this weekend doing the shade-tree mechanic thing. I tossed the old filter with the grommet on it already. Trash pickup was this morning--nuts. Fortunately the Bap-Geon near my office can have one tomorrow.

Since I just did the job it should go a little smoother this time. I also changed the gear oil and the motor oil. God knows when the PO changed it last. The only way I could get the oil filter off was to hammer a screwdriver completely through it and use the handle for leverage. It wouldn't budge otherwise.

BTW, to change all the fluid, I first dropped the pan and replaced the filter. I carefully measured what came out and replaced it after putting the new filter in and the cover on. Then I disconnected the return hose at the tranny, plugged the hole with a rubber bung plug, and put a 3' section of clear tube snugly on the banjo fitting on the return line. Then I put the hose in a bucket where I could see it. I marked the inside of the bucket in 2-quart intervals. I got in the car, started it and put it in drive. When I hit the first mark I shut the car down and added two more quarts of fresh fluid. I kept doing this procedure till the fluid coming out ran red. Then I let about a quart of that run out to be sure I got as much of the old fluid out as I could. Then I just reconnected the return line and checked the fluid level. It took about 10 quarts to do the job.
