The only split chains I have been using have a link with two pegs on and a matching washer with two holes for the opposite side.
You install the link and press the washer over the pegs and then mushroom out the part of peg that protrudes through the washer with either the special press tool or a light hammer using a bigger hammer on the backside for support, lightly tapping on the peg until it mushrooms out over the washer.
