there's always something popping up.... that's the neat thing about these cars - after owning one for a couple years, you have had exposure to pretty much every system...
i'm assuming you checked that the battery and starter connections were good, tight and no corrosion. a bad connection means the solenoid doesnt get enough voltage to activate.
re storage over winter (other reply) last spring we connected the battery in my father in law's Merc boat engine and the starter immediately activated. The starter solenoid had seized up in the on position over the winter, so the mechanic said just to tap the solenoid and that might unstick it, which it did. the funny thing is, the solenoid stuck in the 'up' position (the solenoid is vertical). usually they stick in the down position which is where they sit all winter.
so i'm not surprised to hear that a Saab starter solenoid would stick over winter. Further,I had an 83 900T and got so tired of the solenoid problems that when i replaced the starter i specifically requested a NEW solenoid, becuase the rebuilds are not very good.
