The proper thermostat for a 900 is a three-stage thermostat. First stage is closed fully, second stage is open, third stage us wide open. In this third stage, the thermostat closes the passage to the heater and other things, forcing all the coolant through the radiator.
Usually the trick is to buy the lower temp thermostat and/or the lower temp fan switch. I usually run the standard thermostat (92 deg. C, if I recall), and a lower temp switch (85 deg C?). This helps a LOT.
