unlikely to be a core breach - if it were you'd be smelling it in the cabin every time you turned on the blower
having done this twice suggest using plastic and not brass valve (not sure if brass is even applicable to your model year or even available)
some say its easier to remove core with seat removed and lying on your back
last time I did this - the core istelf was covered in leaves and 20 year old crud and so on - so removing it just for the sake of cleaning is not a bad idea - depending on where you live.
