When the car is first started, the ABS checks the sensors by measuring the resistance of each one. If it's out of range, it will light the ABS light. Since your light went out before you drove off, the ABS figures the sensors are connected. And it's pretty sensitive, so you don't have a broken wire.

Once the car starts moving, the ABS system looks at each wheel speed. When the brakes are off, each wheel should be going at nearly the same speed. If the ABS sees one wheel going slower (or faster), it assumes the sensor is bad and lights the light. Since your light comes ON after you start moving, this is the test you're failing.

A few possibilities. The first is, are you driving on dry roads? If a rear wheel is sticking (due to a sticky parking brake) and it slides on slick spots, the ABS will flag this as a fault.

The cable could be damaged, causing a weak signal. Look in the wheel wells at the cables as the go from the wheel hub to the body. If you see a kinked or frayed cable, that's likely it.

The sensor 'looks' at a toothed gear on the hub. The sensor counts the teeth as they go by to determine speed. But if metallic gunk builds up in between teeth, the sensor will count two teeth as one, and will report a slower speed, tripping the fault. It's not uncommon for metallic debris, such as from semi-metallic brake pads and wear from the rotor to build up. You've got to dig down to access the toothed gears.

You can also bring your car to a dealer (!) or indy shop, and they can read out the codes (because you have a newer one). That can pinpoint the wheel.
