Hello all,

Just a quick note of thanks to everyone here who has posted on stuff like clutch removal, taper pins, and driver's side engine mounts: your tips and tricks helped me finally get the engine out of my SPG tonight. (And to think I only started this in November! No, I'm not that slow, there was lots of other stuff in between.)

In any case for those undertaking same:

The "three fat nuts" method does seem to be the way to go with the clutch. Even with a function slave cylinder, I found was able to get much more clearance (finger deflection) with this method. I managed, however, to still mess this up and not get enough clearance, so I cut the fingers with a dremel-type tool.

The taper pin was about the worst part of the whole thing. I resorted to driling out the pin. Finally, the what was left of it popped out, but the shifter rod was still fused together. I used the cheat method of taking it apart at the adjustable coupling. I had a helper shift into 4th, than I held the tranny-end of the rod with some vice grips, then had her shift into 3rd. There was enought clearance that way.

Finally, the driver's side engine mount was a huge mystery to me, until a saw the two 13mm bolts which hold the mount to the frame of the car. They are just above the divers-side inner-driver joint. Undoing those,as well as the bolt which holds the "strap" piece of the mount to the car allowed me to just pull the engine with the mount attached, rather than separate it with the horizontal bolt.
