does rim width matter or make a difference?

reason i ask is the 205 55 16s on Aeros were rubbing on the very outer curve of the tire, against the wheel arch. Perhaps a 16 inch tire on a narrower 16inch rim wouldnt rub, question is, what (if any ) is the narrowest 16 inch wheel for these cars?
