How rusty? Rusted-thru fuel filter can?

Just happened to me on a darn rusty 89. Had been smelling gas for a long time, and also, it has the long crank trouble. Suddenly I smelled gas a lot and it took forever to start while cranking, and was spraying gas all over while running.
The filter is made like a can, and it had cracked thru at one end where its top is extruded out around the nut inside.
Worst was getting the torx sheet metal screw out that holds the strap around middle of filter, to get some slack to get it out. Needed long 3/8" extensions adapted down to 1/4" and to a torx bit T35, and a breaker bar, at right angles, and hammered on breaker bar just as I twisted. Started free and came easy then.
Banjo bolts and banjo fittings all had massive rust scale on them, but inside were clean as a whistle and threads were fine. Had to crack rust off the bolts to get wrenches on, as I recall, one end 17 mm with 19mm on can, other 19mm with big vise grips on can. That's a regular nut inside the can at each end, floating a little inside the tin. I squeezed right down onto it with vise grips and cracked free no problem.
Filter can will drip gas on you from where it's cracked and then spill it once lines are off.
I'm not a big believer in changing fuel filters unless someone's poured glue into your tank, and this job is no fun. I'd say, only do it if you can see clearly that it's the filter that's leaking. Ancient filter on mine blew clear and free both ways tho it did have that rust crack.
Could be a damaged line or fitting at the filter of course. From what I read on here that happens a lot when people go to change the filter. THINK: Plastic lines are brittle.
