with that you can take out the guess work by 'watching' the hot coolant travelling around the system. i was able to 'see' the blockage in my rad, which was around the fan switch area, stopping the switch from getting to 82c while the bottom of the rad was higher, and so the car ran hot (on the guage as well), but the good fans and switch didn't know about this situation, and so did not help cool the rad. when driving on highway i had less problem, but still running hot-ish. you can see if the coolant is coming through the top hose, into the rad, and see it come out the bottom hose, see the temp in these hoses then look at top left of rad to see if it is the same temp or not. then look at temp on head (not your head, but the engine head), and see if it is more than hoses, etc. then this would be a flow problem, probably t-stat. this thermometer cost me like $50, and worth every cent. removes all the guess work, plus you can see how warm the cat is, or the turbo after a good run! measures to 1000f, so lots of potential...
