Hi - thanks so much for your responses!

The mechanic we took the car to initially to get it inspected after we bought it was not a Saab mechanic - he told us the rotors/brakes needed replacement and we didn't think twice about having him do it (first mistake). There were no noticeable symptoms with the braking system prior to this point.

Then, one or two weeks later, the brakes stopped working as my husband was driving down a hill. He pulled into a gas station and there was no brake fluid in the reservoir. Putting brake fluid in it didn't solve the problem, in fact, from what I remember, after putting more brake fluid in it, the brake pedal locked up (I think the mechanic told us there was brake fluid behind the pedal). We had it towed to the initial mechanic that worked on it, thinking he'd done something wrong, and he was absolutely clueless as to why the brakes weren't working. Eventually we had it towed to the nearest Saab dealership and their diagnostic indicated that it was the ABS pump.

The Saab dealership hasn't worked on it before - simply did the diagnostic, but just told my husband that the car was old and "tired." I've had both a Honda and a Nissan that were doing well at 150,000 miles, so I don't really understand why the mechanic is indicating that the mileage means it ought to be retired, especially with cars that can be notorious for lasting so long...
