dead spark plug?

About a year ago, I bought some of the Iridium NGK plugs and installed them in my 1990 900T. For most of the year, they have been great plugs, and I put about 6000 miles on them, until a problem cropped up that I was able to fix today.
I have been dealing with a rough idle condition for the past few weeks, and it finally manifested itself recently with a completely dead spark plug on cylinder #4. To troubleshoot, I moved the dead plug to #3 cylinder and drove the car a short distance. The problem never cleared up, so I went and bought another spark plug to replace the dead one. The car is running perfect now. The big mystery though is why this plug went bad. These are supposed to be 80,000 mile plugs. Do you think I just got a bad apple, or is this a symptom of an underlying issue related to something else. The O2 sensor is the original, could that be messing up my mixture and causing the plugs to go bad (and why just that one?) could this be a sign the injector is worn or dirty on that cylinder?
I'm just throwing some ideas up against the wall and seeing what sticks...I just find it odd that this plug went bad prematurely. The other, old plug works perfectly in that cylinder, but I haven't driven it but a few hundred miles to see if it's "killing" the plugs in that cylinder yet.
