Before you go for a bad ecu (and they're normally diagnosed as bad when everything else checks good), try cutting and reterminating/soldering the engine ground connections on the intake manifold/head.

I had the obligatory ecu swap on my 87 900 in 1996 or so and six months later the same problems appeared, engine dying/unexplained engine problems. The issue was corroded ground connections at the engine ground point..my indy ended up cutting about a 1/2" off the connections, reterminating them and soldering them. No problems since then.

It could well be that improper engine cleaning/washing contributed to the bad grounds...enough said.
