I'm sure the pros have tricks. Ask at a cash car lot, they've got lots of tricks.
I once saw some patented product meant I think to soften the edges of the chip around the hole so it would merge better, ask at body shop supply store (big auto parts place, not discounter or small town NAPAs.)
What I'd do is get a tube of spot putty, squeeze out a little and mix a drop or so of the correct paint color into it, then fill chip flush or just sub flush. It will sink some as it dries. THEN daub the final paint into the remaining crater. After it's dried for a few days, daub a little more, etc. You want it just above surface before wet-sanding it flush (once dried hard) with real fine paper and then compounding it.
What paint to use? I don't think much of those little touchup bottles or of the lacquer touchup spray cans. (If you have to use spray paint, spray it into a bottle cap and dip the match end into that and paint with that, don't spray on car or you'll have to clean everything off except your little chip.) My preference is a synthetic enamel (not base coat-clear coat)but most places don't sell much of it these days and you usually have to buy a whole quart - - big bucks. Save the rest for painting your lawn furniture, and brush painting rust-prone seams, say bottom edges of doors on inside, bottom of interior of hood where it wicks water in between inner and outer shell and rusts, interior of gas cap where same thing happens, lips of fenders if you ever have the trim strips off, etc.
A little spot that doesn't quite match the rest of the car is hardly going to be noticeable. DON'T spray primer all over everything and try to paint over that it will look like heck.
If chip has rust in the bottom, scrape it with the tip of a paring knife and maybe make chip a little bigger to get all the rust. Treat with conversion coating and prime with enamel primer before you do the filler and paint.
Mixing paint into filler is so color comes close and you don't need to worry about sky blue or red showing thru your top coat.
