My speedometer is way off at high speeds!

We recently acquired a GPS unit, and I've played with it a little on the highway in several cars.

My '88 900T speedometer is accurate up to about 35 mph.

Tonight, I made a trip up/down I-25 (75 mph in places) and to reach 75 mph on the GPS unit, I had to get my speedometer up to 84 mph! This was using cruise control on open, straight highway.

As another data point, there is some construction and the speed limit is reduced to 55mph and they have a roadside radar sign - I set my cruise control to 65 mph, and the GPS and the roadside radar both registered 58mph!

I have the correct sized tires, but I wonder if I have a speedo from an incompatible year or something? Any thoughts?
