Stopping rust (long).

My new (to me) 92 900 SC 5-speed has a very nice body except for 2 or 3 places, and I'd like to stop things from getting worse. The biggest spot is under the battery where the paint is off and there's a thin layer of rust. This is a major trouble spot for these cars, right? The rest of the engine compartment is very clean (no leaks!) except for a few dime-sized rust spots across the front cross piece. At the dealer we put it up on a lift and there was also one small (quarter sized) spot on one of the seams underneath.
I'd like to prevent things from getting worse. Shouldn't there be some sort of tray underneath the battery to keep evil battery gunk off the support shelf? Can I use rustoleum or that POR-15 stuff on the support? What about the dime-sized spots, do they need to be ground out first? I don't care much what the paint looks like inside the engine compartment -- I just want to keep the car for a while.
