Because of a broken turbo oil feed line, which quickly blew out all of the oil, I needed to replace the engine on my 87 vert. The transmission was starting to suffer from the whining differential bearings anyway. As luck would have it, last year the 88 SPG I sold to buy the convertible 12 years ago was rear-ended by a truck and totalled. We bought it for parts. We had serviced the SPG since it was sold and knew the history. I did a head gasket and installed an Erikkson rebuilt transmission when I owned it. We have a good selection of 900 engines available so most customers in the market for a replacement engine opt for one with lower miles. The SPG had 188K when it met it's demise. My opportunity came when we had an unusually light schedule yesterday. I drove the convertible the 5 miles to the shop and started the swap. The car actually ran great considering #4 cylinder had 0 compression. I had replaced the oil feed line hoping for a miracle but the piston died 2 days later. Approximately 10 hourd of Saab fun on Saturday and I gave a water cooled turbo that started right up and no transmission whine! Now my vert really does have the heart of my old SPG. The SPG had recently had a water pump, alternator bushings, oil pump o ring and crank seal. We had sold the clutch as it was recently changed. I replaced the rear main seal and installed the clutch from the vert while the engine was out. Total cost besides the engine/transmission under $50. Working at Road Tested Saabs, Priceless. Dan at Road Tested Saabs in Indianapolis.
