Or running. That's how LH works; the only fuel pressure at startup is the residual pressure plus whatever the pump is able to make during cranking despite the current drain from the starter. Unlike other makes of cars there's no pre-running of the pump.
And it's noticeable: if I pre-prime the pump before starting cranking, using my rig with a momentary contact switch between the fuel pump relay purple wire and ground, car definitely starts with fewer cranks.
Also, it's LONG cranking that's my gripe, not slow cranking, and I don't have a tired battery or dirty battery clamps or posts.
And the car's in reasonably good tune, new NGK BP6ES plugs; wires (Bougies) are kinda old but no indication of missing once running, under any conditions.
Haven't checked compression and it might in fact be kind of tired but it's still true that it starts quicker if I crank twice, in rapid succession, than if I keep cranking on and on on one turn of the key. In fact I think I've noticed that on the second try it sometimes actually catches as you're letting up the key, cranking drain ending, motor still spinning from the cranking.
And what I've noticed, the car starts real quick if it's gravity doing the cranking instead of the starter.
I definitely do have crumbling insulation issues with the positive cable but haven't noticed any corrosion inside the insulation jacket, and the clamps are clean inside and clamped to clean lead posts. I've always been a stickler for that and having a good battery.
But I'm going to give IrieTom's suggestion some attention and look closer at those cables, maybe price a new positive cable at a local battery shop that makes them up.
Anyone else have pleasantly shorter starting after new battery cables?
