causing you to run hot. it has it's own cooler, and you should make sure it is not covered over with caked mud or the like. under pass side headlight.
if you are struggling to keep cool on the freeway, then the rad is not doing it's job, or the coolant isn't getting to it properly (thermostat).
always start with the cheap stuff. thermostat is cheap, so get the right one-only a few dollars more, place an order to eeuroparts (site sponser).
It's also a maintanence item, and a good thing to be sure about.and takes 10mins to install. most (including me) match the thermostat rating to the fan switch. some (not me) have a summer 'set' and a winter 'set'. probably not a bad way to go, certainly can't hurt anything.
back to running hot.
ever have to top off fluid?
if yes, may not be a leak, just too much pressure (from too much heat). check for leakage around expansion tank cap-this will show it has been doing it's job.
i would bet rad needs a flush or a replacement job.
i had a good looking rad flushed professionally last year. cost $50. if you are at this stage, forget a diy flush. i saw what the guy did to my rad, and i could not do it at home. the entire job was based on chemicals and equipment i don't have.
i have advocated the use of an inexpensive infrared thermometer to visually diagnose the cooling system. buy on fleabay for $20+. with one of those, you can watch the coolant working-start car from cold, then 'watch' the hoses first, then areas of the rad once you see thermostat opening. what i found was the top third, on the drivers side, was not getting any coolant. this caused inefficient cooling on the freeway (temp run up 7/8), and fans to come on very late while stationary. they also switched off too early.
check for pin holes in hoses when coolant is very hot (high pressure).
hope this helps
