I'm not kidding. I will use some twine or rope to *gently* pull a hose or three just far enough out of the way to get access to the timing marks. They don't need to be moved far. And of course, any time you've got dangly bits (the rope!) in an engine compartment, make sure the ends are secured so they don't catch in the flywheel or the cooling fan.
Yes, the timing marks can be hard to see. It's been a very long time since I timed a 900, but I'm pretty sure the marks aren't behind the plastic plate. That's just a plate. If you look closer to the engine, you'll see a slot - that's where the marks are.
If it's your first time, or the first time in a long time, I suggest that in addition to using some twine to hold the hoses out of the way, that you do a little recon first. Once you see what you think is the timing slot, rotate the engine a little to make sure you see the numbers and familiarize yourself with them. Things get a little harder when you're trying to aim the timing light that just won't fit, the engine is running next to your ear, and things are moving around.
If you've got a manual tranny, moving the engine is easy. Find a flat piece of ground, put the car in 5th gear, and take off the brake. By pushing on the car one way or another, you can turn the engine a little at a time. Works pretty well.
